Planning Your Military DITY Move

DITY moves are great because they can save your family money while you move. In some rare cases, if you place your cards right, you can even make money off of a military DITY move. You have to know what you are doing, though, and you have to know the right steps and the order in which they go in. If you do not properly follow protocol, you could end up not receiving any help at all with your costs of moving.

In the case of a military DITY move the idea is that you or your spouse is working for a segment of the government. The person that is working for the government is entitled to certain discounts and reimbursements for various things they may want to do, such as moving. In many of these situations, the family that is moving is often moving because of a request by the government to begin with. The first step in your move is to research where you are moving to and what general shipping and moving costs run. Then, you will want to assess your current home situation. Take an inventory of your personal belongings and how many boxes you will need for your move. You will need to estimate the transportation space that your military DITY move will require before you go any further.

Next, the most important part of your military DITY move is to notify the local TMO or JPPSO of your plans. If you do not do this before starting your move, they will not reimburse you and your family will be paying for every penny of the moving costs. This is a critical part of your military DITY move. You may then purchase boxes, organize transportation, and plan the exact dates of your move. You will probably want to keep receipts of everything that you pay for involving your move, so you can document and maximize the amount of reimbursement your family will receive from the government.
